With PhoneFactor, users will get a call on their mobile (or landline) phone when logging into a computer using LogMeIn. The user simply answers and presses # to authenticate their login. PhoneFactor enables LogMeIn to be the first remote connectivity service to offer secure two-factor authentication capabilities at no extra cost.

“As market factors continue to push businesses to support telecommuters and remote workers, tools like LogMeIn become more vital than ever,” said Marton Anka, CTO, LogMeIn, Inc. “Tools such as PhoneFactor could speed that migration by adding another two-factor authentication method.”

“We are providing a second critical layer of security to LogMeIn solutions,” said Tim Sutton, CEO of Positive Networks. “By offering PhoneFactor’s two-factor authentication free of charge, we are not only adding a double layer of security, but we are also making it economically accessible.”

Both LogMeIn and PhoneFactor are web-based services that can be set up in minutes. LogMeIn users can add PhoneFactor to their service by going to www.phonefactor.com. PhoneFactor is compatible with the free version of LogMeIn, as well as LogMeIn Pro and the IT Reach service.

PhoneFactor now has a LogMeIn version

Blog

LogMeIn

PhoneFactor

Products like LogMeIn (GoToMyPC, PCAnywhere, etc.) are easy and very useful. You can instantly connect to your computer at home or at work. You can zip past firewalls, etc. and have access to everything on your PC while at another location. The dirty little secret is that you are potentially opening your computer up to [...]

Products like LogMeIn (GoToMyPC, PCAnywhere, etc.) are easy and very useful. You can instantly connect to your computer at home or at work. You can zip past firewalls, etc. and have access to everything on your PC while at another location. The dirty little secret is that you are potentially opening your computer up to the world of the Internet with only a password as protection. Bad idea of course due to the ease in which the bad guys can get your password.

Millions of people are using LogMeIn and we have now created a version of PhoneFactor that can be used by individuals. It provides strong two-factor authentication protecting the PCs that are used for remote control and access with any of the LogMeIn products.

Here is a link if you want to give it a try and a link to the press release below that (if you want to see LogMeIn and us brag about how cool it is). Shoot us any questions you may have along the way.

PhoneFactor Adds Phone-Based Two-Factor Authentication for LogMeIn

News

authentication capabilities

authentication service

connectivity service

LogMeIn

PhoneFactor

remote access service

Tim Sutton

tokens

New Tokenless, Phone-Based Authentication Service Gives LogMeIn Users an Additional Secure Remote Connectivity Option March 25, 2008 – Positive Networks announced today a version of PhoneFactor for use with the LogMeIn suite of remote connectivity services. LogMeIn becomes the first remote connectivity service that can include tokenless secure two-factor authentication capabilities protecting both individuals and businesses. Previously, LogMeIn only had a token-based two-factor authentication offering.

PhoneFactor turns any phone into an authentication device and has been optimized for secure access to computers using the LogMeIn service, which enables millions of people to connect to, and remotely control their computers both at home and at work. Both LogMeIn and PhoneFactor are web-based services that can be set up in minutes.

“We believe LogMeIn is the most widely used remote access service and is already very secure,” said Tim Sutton, CEO of Positive Networks. “With PhoneFactor, LogMeIn users that want security beyond basic passwords have another simple and very secure option. PhoneFactor gives them complete two-factor authentication without the hassle or expense normally associated with alternatives that require an additional device.”

LogMeIn users can add PhoneFactor to their service quickly and easily by going to www.phonefactor.net. PhoneFactor is compatible with the free version of LogMeIn, as well as LogMeIn Pro and the IT Reach service which is designed for providing IT support. PhoneFactor costs between $15-30 per year per user and can be activated instantly.

“Adding PhoneFactor is a great option for users that want two-factor authentication without the need for tokens, certificates or hardware,” said Michael Simon, CEO of LogMeIn. “It’s great to see innovative companies creating products to service the millions of users in the LogMeIn community.”

PhoneFactor is a simple two-factor authentication and identity protection service that provides far greater security than usernames and passwords. This award-winning phone-based authentication service can use any cellular phone (or traditional phone as the only requirement is to be able to receive a traditional telephone call) as a second authentication factor. The user enters a user name and password just like normal, and then simply answers an instant telephone call and presses “#”. This completes the authentication process. Complete two-factor identity and computer protection is instantly enabled with no need for tokens, smart cards or certificates.

“Take a moment to consider all of the valuable and private information that exists on your computer,” said Evan Conway, EVP of Communications and Chief Identity Officer. “With PhoneFactor, you can instantly provide a layer of security than ensures that only you can connect to your PC.”

PhoneFactor and LogMeIn

Blog

LogMeIn

PhoneFactor

Another week, another new product feature in the free PhoneFactor product! This one actually shipped with PhoneFactor v1.1, but we’re just announcing it now. PhoneFactor now supports securing LogMeIn out of the box! If you’re not familiar with LogMeIn, you must be living under a rock – they’re the biggest remote desktop control service by far. Millions of people use it to access home computers, log into a work desktop, and so on.

PhoneFactor adds security to LogMeIn by allowing all logins to LogMeIn-connected computers to be confirmed through PhoneFactor. To use, simply install LogMeIn and then install PhoneFactor 1.1. During the PhoneFactor wizard, check the applications box and then check the LogMeIn box on the next screen, or if you’ve already run the wizard, select Windows Applications and check LogMeIn. You’ll need to reboot for the setting to take effect.

After that, it works like usual – just start the PhoneFactor agent, add a user for yourself, add your phone number, and you’re done. All of your LogMeIn sessions will now be protected.

The roadmap is packed with great features still to come, so watch this space for more!

-Steve
