David Berlind on two-factor

Posted  September 11, 2007 By Steve Dispensa

The two-factor authentication space is red hot right now, so it’s getting lots of coverage from places like eWeek and, most recently, ZD Net: David Berlind has a great piece on US attitudes toward mullti-factor authentication in which he takes a stab at what a large-scale two-factor rollout has to look like for US customers.

Money quote (literally): "Personally, I’d prefer real two-factor authentication and I’d even be willing to pay extra for it. But we’re a culture of convenience." His implication is that complex solutions won’t be widely accepted in the US.

His conclusion: no new hardware or software for end users. I couldn’t agree more – the only way strong authentication can possibly scale is a hardware-less, software-less solution that end users can operate easily. A solution like, say, PhoneFactor!
